Interior Design Trends for 2020

As we wave goodbye to 2019 and usher in a brand-new decade let’s take a look at those all-important interior design trends that are set to be big in 2020. With the environment and a move towards being Eco-friendlier at the front of many people’s minds, it isn’t hard to see just where much of the inspiration that is already being seen in this area is coming from.

Expect to see sustainability become a prerequisite in interior design, rather than a passing trend or fad.

Natural is In

With a big nod to the environment and increasing awareness of the planet around us, the natural influence can be seen in a number of this year’s trends. The colour shade that is tipped to be the big thing this year is a subtle, rather gentle green with a soft earthy quality to it. This is not a loud, in-your-face but rather something relaxing and oh so neutral. This tone of green lends itself really well to creating a calm and relaxing, outdoorsy environment within the home and mixes perfectly with a gentler style of decorating.

Another trend that is tipped to be big this year is the more environmentally conscious idea of recycled furniture that may see more people giving their tired and outdated furniture a little makeover rather than rushing out to buy something new. Wood is certainly in and not just in terms of furniture. Monochrome, but not as we know it, is the key. Think striking opposites of dark and light but with a more natural colour scheme rather than the harsher black and white contrast that we have seen before.

Wood Flooring

Durable wood flooring has never really gone out of fashion and is still an all-time favourite with many people. It is the perfect match for this year’s predicted colour trend and is ideal for use in a more natural decorating style. As people become increasingly more environmentally conscious, we will see an increased demand for wooden flooring that bears the FSC logo as people look to be more responsible with what they do purchase. The lighter colors of ash wood flooring make it a great choice for this year’s colour palette, and its highly durable nature means that it should last you a long time making it a very eco-friendly choice.

Other trends we will be seeing in wood flooring over 2020 include those woods with plenty of definition that offer contrast and natural characteristics. Texture is a key to many of the main design trends for 2020 and this is certainly true when it comes to flooring, distressed wood flooring and grain effects will almost certainly be in whilst smoother wood flooring will become less popular as people look for a much more natural look in their homes. Continuing the natural theme even further and fun patterns and uneven width of flooring are likely to be on the increase with wide planks and diagonal layouts featuring more prominently.

Clutter-Free

With the size of modern homes becoming increasingly smaller 2020 is predicted to see a huge rise in compact and even concealed furniture solutions. Kitchens with concealed appliances and even cupboards are becoming the must-have for many younger couples and that means clean lines and clutter-free surfaces are everywhere. Space-saving furniture allowing maximum use of smaller spaces is a must and, in many ways, fits in with the cool trending colors for the year and more natural use of materials.

With a nod to the environment, again, the humble house plant may be the big design accessory of the year. Think green, leady and imposing – the perfect complement for many of the other trends set to wow us in 2020.
